History repeats itself.
Hi Everyone.
The 2007 has just gone very fast like a wink of an eye,we are already doing Highwater run on the Zambezi river and the reason is the flood hence the title of the story. It is exactly what happened in 2006, the floods has alrteady strted affecting some countries like Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi as well as some parts of Zimbabwe. The river activities have not been spared from effects of the floods. The continious pouring of the rains that started the Ist week of Decenber to almost the 2nd week of January did the farmers and everyone bad. While the initiational stages was good as those that planted their crops early were smiling due to the rains, they quickly prayed that the rains stop. Talk of asking and getting in abundance, and then regreting.Well kayaking is good at present as Rapid # 11 has started curling thus making it the kayaking paradise. However from rapid 12a to 13 it is very trick as one has to summon ones`s skill or go swimming.I hope we will be seing more kayakers this season. Cheers and happy 2008.

Happy Paddlers on the Zambezi
Hello Marc,

I’m writing to convey my total satisfaction with Hippo, Lovemore and Snake regarding my kayak adventure on the Zambezi River and the village tour. The whole trip was great, I’ll never forget it. Hippo arranged everything perfectly, Lovemore was a wonderful guide (solid kayaker as well) and Snake did an incredible job capturing everything on DVD. The other night I showed my Zambezi video to my kayak buddies (8 others) and it blow their minds! They all want to experience the thrill of kayaking the mighty Zambezi .

Best regards,

Wally

The Zambezi is now ready and inviting.
Hi Everyone.
The level of the water on the Zambezi has been going down gradual in the months of April and May.In June it has been dropping very fast, rafting began on the 16th of June and all the Companies are back on track. It is now what we call High water run which means rafting begins from rapid number 11 from both Zimbabwean and and Zambian side. The take out point varies from Company to Company. At present the problem area is from below rapid number 12a to 13, this covers number 12a,b,c and 13 it very narrow place there is lots of boils, whirlpools, eddy fences etc.The other problem area was the narrows believed to very deepest, this area we normal stop going through when the level hits the 1100 mark and run it when the level hits 1050 thus Companies have just started to run the place as the level is below 1050 at present. We are looking to alot of people who will be coming to have some fun on the Zambezi this year as it will be one of the best season considering the rate the river is dropping. There is also the Zambezi Challenge which will be in October, that will also be highlight of the 2007. There also a lot of multi -days trips from all Companies this years than before, hopeful some of you will be joining us on those trips. Those of you that are kayakers and would like to explore the Zambezi, you can hire the kayaking gear from the www.zambezikayakrental.com and will organise your trip.As for the beginners we will train you from the pool at the backpackers lodges in town just get hold of us on our e-mail adddress which are as follows, mandrisen@yahoo.com or lovemorekalinda@yahoo.com we will respond very fast.
Bye for now looking forward to hear from you.

Alex Nicks and the Zambezi - for zambezikayakrental.com
On my travels people regularly ask me where my
favorite place is.While it’s difficult to give one specific location the
Zambezi always crops up in there.

For any intermediate paddler and upwards, with a
confidant roll this is the next level for
fun/challenge. Whether you consider yourself a
playboater, a river runner or a hybrid of the two, the
stretch below Victoria falls has something for
everyone. Beautiful emerald colored water,
spectacular world class rapids and play spots, warm
water and cool beer, it’s hard to beat. Unforgettable
for many different reasons

It can be run at any time of the year but if you’re
going to take an international flight there you need
to aim for the ‘low’ water run which generally falls
sometime between July and January depending on the
rain fall of that year. Between January and July the
river is at it’s largest and while possibly the most
spectacular it is so huge that it is too far from the
river bed for the best river running and play boating
features to appear.

My favorite time of the year is the early low water
season anywhere between July and September.
At this time of year the river still has its huge feel
about it but many of the payboating features are
beginning to emerge, rapid 2 and 12b among others.
Also the pour over in 5, among many other lines, will
open up, ask locals for the best way to tackle it…
Above this the days are warm, the nights cool and the
area generally mosquito and therefore Malaria free
(something that never happens in Uganda!). These are
the days when you can run a variety of very huge lines
or cherry pick some of the waves beginning to form.
While huge, because of the strength of the flow the
holes tend to be more forgiving and flushy, although
this is a term or relativity.

The Zambezi is on a constant cycle of change either
rising or falling and as it continues to drop into
October the rapids will change and holes will emerge
and become stickier most specifically rapid 18, a
great place to park off and watch rafters get the snot
beaten out of them.Even though temperatures begin to get obnoxious
towards the end of October/beginning of November the
river is still always world class and it’s easy to
forget how hot it is outside while boating in a
t-shirt on the emerald and cooling waters.

Somewhere around the middle of November the Rainy
season usually starts and is generally associated with
a reduction in the temperature but an increase in the
humidity. From here on the river will reverse its cycle and rise
in jumps linked to storms until it peaks around
April/May.Generally the top section will close commercially
sometime in January (it becomes impossible for Rafters
to portage Number 9 Commercial Suicide) and soon after
this Rapid 11 will form (its more recently well
published) barrel feature. There is a fairly small window on this, somewhere
around two weeks with it being at its very best for a
smaller amount of time (stay in touch with
Hippo/Lovemore to keep a pulse on levels).
And soon after this the river begins to flush all
features out to form large, well lets be real here
f***ing enormous, wave trains which would almost be
lethal to swimmers, it’s an exhilarating but
unforgiving place to kayak and perhaps not rightly
what the river is famous for, the spectacular pool
drops and waves of low water.
